LCHS Shooting Team Competition In The Tennessee State Trap Shoot
The LCHS Shooting Team competed in the Tennessee State Trap Shoot, June 20th & 21st, at the Nashville Gun Club.
On Friday, the Junior Varsity posted a team score of 449 out of 500 possible clay targets thrown, good enough to take 6th Place out of 38 JV squads.
The JV Squad was led by Sam Brown and Travis Mayfield, each shooting 91 out of 100, followed by Jacob Bradley (90), Brown Boyd (90), and JC Mills (87). Sam Brown and JC Mills each earned a 25 straight patch for completing one round of 25 without a missed target.
On Saturday, the LCHS Varsity Team posted a 482, which is taken from the top 5 scores from the entire team of 3 squads of 5. This was good enough to place in a tie for 4th place overall out of 117 Varsity squads competing.
LCHS Varsity was led by Bobby Benson’s (99), Logan Cowheard (98), Ben Threet (96), Chase Kobeck (95), and Rhett Yates (94).
Five other Wildcats shot above 90 including Tanner Clark (93), Jackson Wood (92), Austin Moore (91), Derek Eaton (91), and Connor Walters (90).
Logan Cowheard earned a 50 straight patch, while Rhett Yates earned two 25 straight patches, Ben Threet and Tanner Clark both achieved their 25 straight patches.
Bobby Benson’s 99, earned him a 50 straight patch and a 25 straight patch, narrowly missing a 100 straight by missing 1 clay in the 3rd round.
There were three 100’s posted by other shooters in the tournament which were Grand Champion, 1st place and 2nd place.
Benson tied for 3rd with 10 other shooters with his 99, putting him in a tie breaker shoot off at the end of the completion on Saturday night.
Bobby advanced through round 1 by hitting all 5 clays at the 16 yard line stations, then completed round 2 safely by hitting all 5 clays at the 22 yard line, and was finally eliminated at the 3rd station at the 27 yard line with a miss. 6 of the 10 other shooters missed a target before Benson, crowning him as 7th highest shooter in the State tournament out of 554 Varsity shooters.
After the shoot off, LCHS Head Coach Greg Holt was quoted in an interview as saying, “I am extremely proud of this entire LCHS Shooting Team, we are a relatively young team, this being only our 3rd year to complete at the State Tournament, and we continue to get better each year and were only off by 4 missed clays from the State Champions Coffee county’s 486”!
